5 Spice Cookies

3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup molasses
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp allspice

sugar for coating (white, or turbinado if you like the crunch)

Beat shortening until fluffy; add sugar gradually, beating well. Add egg and molasses, and mix well.

Combine flour and other dry ingredients. Mix well. Add about 1/4 of dry mixture to creamed mixture, beating until smooth after each addition. Cover and chill for 1 hour.

Shape dough into 1" balls and roll in sugar. Place 2" apart on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 375 degrees for 9-11 minutes.
